Coleman Engineering Company Turns a Page

Coleman Engineering Company announces that John Edlebeck, President and Principal of Geotechnical Engineering Operations will be retiring in September 2021. Operational activities will be maintained by the experienced and capable operations managers for geotechnical engineering, geotechnical drilling and laboratory testing services. Kevin Trevillian, P.E. will assume responsibilities of the Principal of Geotechnical Engineering Operations.

John started full-time with Coleman Engineering in 1985 as an engineering technician primarily tasked with construction materials testing and geotechnical testing of soils at sites throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Northern Wisconsin. Having a strong background in testing and the measurement of physical properties of construction materials, he was named the construction materials laboratory manager in 1991. During his tenure as the laboratory manager he was responsible for the quality management of testing services throughout Michigan and Wisconsin. His efforts earned a reputation of quality and customer service. During this period Coleman gained laboratory validation through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and prequalified status with Michigan DOT and Wisconsin DOT. Through his continued guidance the current laboratory staff attained national accreditation through AASHTO:resource, the gold standard for voluntary laboratory accreditation, while maintaining US Army Corps of Engineers validation, achieving CCRL national accreditation and continued prequalification with Michigan and Wisconsin DOT.

John was brought on as the Principal of Geotechnical Engineering Operations in 2005 which increased his responsibilities to include Geotechnical Engineering and Contract Drilling services. Through his promotion of the geotechnical engineering services, Coleman was recognized in a larger service area which garnered projects from Colorado to West Virginia. These higher profile projects drew the attention of Federal Agencies, major national engineering consultants and industries looking for qualified geotechnical engineering support services. These clients and projects further challenged Coleman to improve their services and expand their geographic footprint.

Through his understanding and reputation for testing of construction materials, he has participated in developing tests for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as well as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International). He has presented topics on materials testing and geotechnical engineering at various professional seminars throughout the country.

The geotechnical operation has generated highly qualified and talented operational staff and managers to continue the reputation of Coleman Engineering geotechnical services. John feels that “Coleman epitomizes an engineering firm that embraces creativity and development of its services and personnel. The ability to foster creativity in an individual is very rewarding. More than once Coleman has been complimented by clients on the ability of staff to be nimble and adapt to changed conditions, changing times and changing technology. “
